Jan 12, 2024

Our nation mourns the loss of a passionate advocate for the well-being of ordinary Canadians, an intellectual dedicated to the pursuit of a just and prosperous society.

Ed committed decades of his life to the relentless fight for justice and equality, both within Canada and globally. From his role as a Member of Parliament to his leadership of the New Democratic Party and presidency of Rights & Democracy, he tirelessly championed the rights of all individuals, with a particular focus on those marginalized in society.

As a steadfast proponent of equal rights, Ed played a crucial role in embedding fundamental rights and liberties into our country’s laws and constitution. His unique intellectual prowess allowed him to bridge the gap between the challenges faced by everyday citizens and the efforts of movements and institutions working towards economic democracy.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Broadbent family, and we extend our sympathies to all mourning his loss. The House of Labour has lost a dedicated ally, and Canada bids farewell to a respected and principled statesman.
