Union dues
It has been brought to our attention that dues were not collected on the retroactive pay received by IUOE members within the healthcare sector. Pursuant to article 9 of the Collective Agreement, such dues ought to have been collected by the Employer when the payments were made. The same thing happened in 2007. This is a significant loss in revenue for the Union, but given the circumstances, it would be extremely difficult to recoup all of the dues, especially from retirees and other former members who have resigned. It would be unfair to only deduct dues from currently employed members. As a result, the Executive Board has decided to waive those outstanding dues. However, we will be instructing Health PEI to deduct dues from any future retroactive pay.
Education fund
Despite having received another $25,000 for the fiscal year beginning April 1, 2010, the education fund is depleted. There are already a number of applications on file and some of them might get processed if and when certain allocated funds get reimbursed. If they want, members can still take a chance in filing an application form for this fiscal year.
Pursuant to our new Collective Agreement, the Education Fund will be increased by another $25,000 for April 1, 2011 – March 31, 2012. This will bring the total up to $135,000.
Elections
The election of Unit Representatives will take place at the next regular unit meetings scheduled in early October. Nominations can be made from the floor at those meetings. There are two unit representatives from the West Prince region, three unit representatives from the East Prince region, four unit representatives from the Queens region, one representative from the Eastern Kings region and one representative from the southern Kings region.
Annual meeting
The meeting is scheduled for November 4, 2010 at 7 PM with the reception at 6 PM. It will be held at the Best Western in Charlottetown. There is only one trustee position up for election this year. Again, nominations may be received from the floor. Annual reports will be presented. The guest speaker is to be announced. This meeting is open to all IUOE members within the province of Prince Edward Island. We strongly urge you to attend. There will be a large number of door prizes.
Bursary
Please note that the deadline for receiving applications for the IUOE Local 942 bursary is October 1, 2010. The bursary is for $500 and will be drawn at the Annual Meeting. In order to qualify, an applicant must be the child of an IUOE member and be currently enrolled in a post secondary course of studies. Application forms may be obtained at the union office or from any of the Unit Representatives.
Collective Agreement
We are hoping to get the Collective Agreement printed soon. We will be distributing copies as soon as they become available.
Website
The Union is creating a new website. Members will be able to access the site for information about the organization, collective agreements, newsletters and links to other websites. We hope to have it unveiled at the Annual Meeting in November. If you have any suggestions regarding its contents, please do not hesitate to contact the union office.
